July 20, Colombo: Over 300 Sri Lankans will soon be eligible to obtain permanent resident visas in the United States under the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. The 2007 US Diversity Visa Lottery has awarded visas to 383 Sri Lankans. United States Tuesday announced the results of the program and have notified the winners.
The congressionally mandated program awards 50,000 permanent resident visas annually to persons from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. Applicants registered for the DV-2007 program were selected at random from over 5.5 million qualified entries received during a 60-day application period started on October 5, 2005.
US Department of State urged the selected applicants to act on their immigrant visa applications quickly. The applicants must provide proof of a high school education or its equivalent, or show two years of work experience in an occupation that requires at least two years of training or experience within the past five years, for the visa interview.
Among South Asian countries Bangladesh topped the list with 5,901 winners while Nepal came in the second place with 1,526 slots.
The dates for the registration period for the DV-2008 lottery program will be widely publicized during August 2006.
