1700 Bulgarians from a total of 82 000 people around the world have been invited to apply for the US Green Card lottery 2007, the national radio reported.
Among the East European nations, Ukrainians and Albanians have expressed the greatest interest in becoming US residents with some 7200 applicants for Ukraine and 2000 for Albania
A computer-generated random lottery drawing chooses applicants for Diversity Visas lottery. The US State Department notifies successful candidates and they may apply for visa.
The Program makes available 50,000 permanent resident visas annually, to people from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States.
The visas, however, are distributed among six geographic regions with a greater number of visas going to regions with lower rates of immigration. Within each region, no one country may receive more than seven percent of the available Diversity Visas in any one year.
The Immigration Lottery makes permanent residence visas available to persons meeting simple, but strict, eligibility requirements.
